Gypsum is different from conventional plant nutrition products. Its primary role is soil amendment and conditioning, rather than simply feeding the plant.
In sodium-affected soils, excess exchangeable sodium can cause clay particles to disperse, reducing pore space, infiltration and drainage. Calcium from gypsum can replace exchangeable sodium. Once displaced, the sodium must be moved out of the root zone through adequate leaching.
